Outside and inside, borders and frames are the central themes of this first solo exhibition of oil paintings on canvas, on the reverse of stretched, primed canvas, and on wood. Several of the works depict a windowsill, the divider between outside and inside of the room. Transparent and opaque colorful glass objects stand on it. The observing gaze turns from the interior outwards, seemingly inviting the viewer to observe and identify with the objects in the window. At times the painting is on a two-level surface which deconstructs the scene, breaking the narrative of figurative painting to create two points of view. The frame on the reverse side of the canvas bounds the canvas, disrupting the viewer from arriving at the open space symbolized by the exhibition’s title, the sea. The paintings engage in the unattainable beyond the window frame.
